HELPFUL INFO
Here are the answers to the questions we’re most frequently asked:
Our regular kraft grades cover 80 - 250 GSM. (60 GSM paper coming soon!)
Our absorbent range for laminates covers 120 - 150 GSM
Our paper has passed the SGS sensory examination, covering odour and taste, as per the German Food, Articles of Daily Use and Feed Code (LFBG), Sections 30 and 31, with amendments dated 1 September 2005. It is suitable for food-adjacent applications, like carry bags for packed food.
We do not currently have a formal food-grade certification, so we do not recommend using our paper for applications where it will be in direct contact with food.
For domestic orders, contact our marketing department at marketing@starkridgepaper.com for current offers & payment terms
For export orders we accept Cheque, Demand Draft, Documents Against Payment, Letter of Credit & Telegraphic Transfer, in US Dollars or Indian Rupees, with delivery terms options of EXW (Ex- Works), CFR (Cost and Freight), CIF (Cost and Insurance and Freight), FOB (Free On Board)
The Paper Maker’s Dictionary
New to the world of paper? Here’s a quick run-down of the most commonly used terms & what they actually mean.
GSM
GSM means Grams per Square Meter, or how much one square meter of a paper weighs.
It serves as a primary indicator of paper quality, thickness, and durability. Higher GSM values correlate with heavier, stiffer, and stronger paper
You calculate GSM by weighing a 10cmx10cm square sample of the paper, then multiplying that weight by 100 to arrive at the GSM value.
Moisture Content
Moisture Content is the percentage of water present in the paper.
You calculate moisture content using the formula:
The "oven dry weight" is recorded when the paper has been completely dried in an oven till it reaches a constant, unchanging weight.
COBB Value
COBB Value is a measure of paper’s water absorption.
The Cobb Test evaluates water resistance by measuring how much water one square meter of the paper's surface absorbs in a specific time frame (most commonly in 60 seconds, expressed as Cobb 60).
You calculate Cobb Value using the formula:
Bursting Strength
Bursting Strength is a measure of how much pressure paper can withstand before it ruptures.
Bursting strength is determined by clamping a sample of the paper to a rubber diaphragm & subjecting it to increasing levels of pressure. The peak pressure at which the paper ruptures is recorded as the Bursting Strength.
Bursting Strength may be measured in KiloPascals (kPa), grams or kilograms per square centimeter (g/cm² or kg/cm²), or Pounds per square inch (psi), depending on the testing equipment’s gauge.
Burst Factor (BF) & Burst Index (BI) is the ratio of paper’s Burst Strength to its GSM
Burst Factor (BF) is heavily used in Asian markets, while the international ISO standard uses Burst Index (BI).
Bursting Strength Formulae
Bursting Strength is measured in many different units, so there are multiple formulae to calculate Burst Factor:
Converting between BF & BI:
If you know the BF, you can calculate BI = BF × 0.098
If you know the BI, you can calculate BF = BI × 10.197
